Granita - Frozen Sicilian Dessert

Sicilians like to start the day with something sweet. When taking in cosideration high temperatures in Sicily during the summer, having granita for breakfast could be the obvious choice. This dessert is made of water, sugar and different flavourings such as lemon, orange, mandarine, mint, strawberry, chocolate, coffee. In Sicily you will find that for breakfast they serve brioche with granita.

Making granita at home is very easy. You will need only few simple ingredients. Here is a recipe for coffee granita which is typical for Messina where it's often served with a whipped cream.

Take 1/4 cup of caster sugar for every two cups of espresso or strong coffee. Whisk the sugar into the hot coffee, and let the mixture cool to room temperature before placing it into the fridge in a shallow metal or glass dish.

When sides begin to freeze, using the whisk to break it up and move it to the center. Do this every 15 minutes or so. When there is no more loose liquid in the mix, whisk all together and let it freeze for about 15 - 20 minutes or more. Serve in a glass with some whipping cream and grated chocolate on the top.
